The mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The further mission of First United Methodist Church is to create and build Christian community through INVITING, FORMING and SENDING faithful, active disciples of Jesus Christ.
In the Bible Jesus is very clear that we are to love God with all our heart, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourself. You can’t love God without loving your neighbor; you can’t love your neighbor without loving God! Because of this, at First UMC, we believe that we are called to put love first in our lives and to live out of a center of love. Unfortunately, our world doesn’t always make that easy, and much of our formation as humans in this world has taught us the opposite. So in order to put love first, we have to practice. The Administrative Council highlighted the following goals to help us to practice and develop our love first skills as we grow in relationship to God and as a disciple of Jesus.
The congregation will have a common understanding that we come together to follow Jesus (This is our “why”).
This means we:
Bear each others’ burdens
Grow spiritually with God and one another
Participate in service and social justice (Keep personal piety and social holiness together as John Wesley would say.)
Empower one another to use our God-given gifts
Live life by Christ’s example
The congregation will have a common understanding that there are many ways to “church” together and that the church is constantly changing, led by the Holy Spirit.
We will put the ministry in the hands of the people, empowering and equipping people to be active disciples of Jesus in their everyday lives.
We will reach out and build relationships with stressed out parents and their kids.
